Synopsis A boy called Fool and his mother are about to be evicted from their home by the local landlord. Fool, anxious to get money from anywhere agrees to help his sister's boy-friend break into the landlord's house. What they discover there is a bit on the scary side.
Rant "The People Under The Stairs" is one of the less abysmal films produced by Wes Craven. Variously described as a horror, a comedy and a classic fairytale, the picture can also be read as a somewhat deranged commentary on the exploitation of the urban poor. Or maybe that's just me. Its political overtones aside, the film should also recieve the 1991 Pedigree Chum award for most creative use of a Rottweiler. Not much can be said of Josh's fleeting appearance in the dramatically innovative role of "Young Cop" - he emerges from a sqad car, sporting a hat that would not have looked out of place in a May Day parade on Red Square, delivers a couple of lines, climbs back into the aforementioned car, and drives off. Modesty, of course, prevents me from making any mention of his nightstick - but I just have.
