Extremely Sad

Picture the scene. You're trapped aboard a diplomatic station in deep space, with nine tenths of your waking life spent shackled to a workstation in C&C. You're overstretched, you're underpaid, and in this environment, you've about as much hope of finding romance as George W Bush has of correctly identifying the president of Pakistan. Tonight, however, you are not to be deterred. It's February 14th, and only 4 hours stand between you and the start of your next shift - 4 short hours in which to experience that most elusive of pastimes, an evening spent in the company of an interesting and attractive member of the opposite sex.

Nevertheless, your military training and natural efficiency have served you well, and by 16.00hrs, you're reasonably prepared. You're neatly trigged up in your very best uniform, you've politely allowed yourself to be charged an extortionate 40 credits for a bunch of synthetic roses by the same unscrupulous flower vendor who's ripped you off for the past 3 years, and you've arrived at the Zocalo in timely fashion...... only to discover that the object of your affections has absconded with the special ambassador from Pak'ma'ra - leaving you a box of choccies and an insulting little note about how after spending the night with a being equipped with facial appendages, human males just seem so...... unsatisfactory.

There is, however, no need to flush yourself out of the nearest airlock just yet. As an aspiring young EarthForce officer, you're well versed in the art of extracting the best from every situation, and two courses of action present themselves: Firstly you can hang about in the Zocalo looking disarmingly lost, until someone like me turns up to drag you off to a disreputable bar, then back to your quarters for a swift game of Pin The Lieutenant To The Headboard. Secondly, and rather more attractively, you can retire to your room, and turn that nice bunch of roses you bought into some very stylish comfort food.
